My engine dies once it gets warm. help?

hi
ive got a 1983 mk1 1.1 golf C formel E. i blew the head gasket a few months ago had it mended whilst also having a full service, new cam belt, oil filter, fuel filter, alternator belt, spark plugs, valves maybe some other stuff but i think thats it. o and ive had the carb all cleaned out.
anyways the car starts 1st time everytime but the problem is that after around 10-15minutes of driving once the engine is warm the engine stutters, the accelerator cuts out n the engine slowly dies. if you leave it for a about 5minutes it goes a bit further until the engine heats up again and does the same. theres a chance that the piston rings might have gone wen i done the head gasket. i wondered if any1 knew what may be causing this as im in desperate need of some help?
Thanks
Mike

hello there.just had a 1300 mark one in at the garage where i work.it had a fuel blockage caused by a rusty filler neck.i renewed the neck, cleaned the tank out and blew out both the fuel lines that run under the car.also renewed the fuel pump for reliabilitys sake and added a new in line filter for good measure too.
it cured this one,its a fairly common fault on mark 1s.
the car came in with the same complaint as yours, very frustrating!the in line filter had bits of rust(from the filler neck)in it so to keep the car mobile i renewed the filter and blew out the lines between the engine and the tank.the car covered 200 miles without any more trouble before returning to have the filler neck etc fixed.
  hope this helps you,good luck.

if it runs on points they prob will have changed them when they serviced your car i'd check to see if they have set them at the right gap as they are very sensitive, i've experienced similar probs in my 1300 driver check your haynes if you've got one it'll give you the right size gap for your model.

I have EXACTLY the sam problem currently, my has points too and has recently been serviced.

Im thinking this might be the problem?

i'd check that they are set properly in my experience it's been so long since most mechanics changed a set of points they have forgot how to do it properly! not there fault really just not many people have them these days. my haynes says for an 83 driver (which is what i have) it should be set to 0.4mm i do this with a set of feeler blades. also put a bit of grease on the cam stops the knuckle on the points wearing and affecting ur gap. might be worth changing ur condensor aswell if it doesn't look very new.

i had a similar problem when i had my engine rebuilt put it all back in loads of new bits but would run shit once it got warm. take it to garages they said piston rings compression all this kind of thing. i thought the engine was gonna come back out!!! anyway my mate had done the points and didn't know what he had been doin at the time and had set them wrong! set them properly did the timing and boom year later still goin strong!!!

i swear too god if my wheel fell off i'd check the points first it's always what goes wrong in mine!
God that was a long post hope it helps lol!

points live beneth the distributor cap. pop the two springs on the side and lift it off. remove the rotor arm and the plastic cover and there you find the points. haynes tells you how to set them

well back again. after having the gasket fixed it ran like a dream for about an hour anyways. im know back to stage 1 with not a clue of whats going wrong. dropped it down to my mechanic today he's gonna take a look thinks that the fuel pump might be damaged from when i overheated it and blew the headgasket.
its not a fuel blockage as there'd be more crap in the carb n that got cleaned out a couple weeks ago. not the points either.
If any1s got anymore ideas the help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

change your points and condensor.
i had exactly the same problem it was my condensor breaking down as soon as it got warm, changed the pair and now havent had it once!
