MK1 golf 1.1 carb issue

Hi just a quick question for you guys that are wanting to help out.. iv got a mk1 golf 1.1 but the car does seem to cut out. i think its the carb. it starts fine but sounds like its running way to fast, also when the car is driving its fine but soon as you come to slowing down or stop the car will cut off any idea what this is? iv done a full service on the car but i think it needs a new carb maybe..

Any help

sounds like the carb needs a retuning, would start there; although when was the carb lest cleaned/rebuilt

by full service what have you done?

Check the base gasket where it bolts to the manifold, very tempramental and a common cause of what you are describing.
Take the air filter off, grab the carb and see if the engine tone changes when you move the carb side to side or front to back, if it does you need a new gasket

Also check all vac lines to/from carb. My guess is as above though.

hi guys ok i took the carb out and put back on it looks like it needs a new carb gasket as abit of air is going in.. but i put it all back together and it started first time on it on but runs way to fast.. so im abit lost..i tried to adjust the idle on it but could find the correct setting.

and also im not sure its been clean for some time as i bought the car about 2weeks ago.. so that could be a good start but i have had about 2cans of carb cleaner through it and also changed the gasket cover on the head gaskets and new oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, themo, sparks, new oil, new oil switch.. so iv done a fair few but still nothing on the carb side of things

Is the choke on? Change the gasket for what it costs as its weak already. When stripping down clean all parts with cleaner so it's like new going back in.

Is it a Webber carb?

If so I got mine from a guy on ebay from South Wales, genuine parts too, really helpful bloke and only cost about a fiver.

If the carb is worn out it will suck in air where it shouldn't so you will never get the tick over down, keep your eyes open for a recon webber is my advise, I also bought a complete carb rebuilt kit and new jet off the same bloke on ebay, did it myself which was a fiddle but satisfying.
