main bearing helpage :s

Is there any way of knowing the main bearing size without tearing it apart? I've been told by VW there are 3 sizes and they cant find it on reg,neither can GSF

No. You need to strip the engine. There's no guarantee that your journals are the size or shape that they were when the engine was new.
