Main Bearing

Hi folks, I'm new here and have to cme striahgt to this bit of the forum, as i have an emergency!

My brother is the golf owner but i'll be the one fixing it.  He ran it without oil pressure for about a mile and now it sounds like a diesel.  He topped the oil up at a servise station and managed the next 20ish miles to get home without low oil pressure.

Is it enough to just replace the mains and big end bearings or is it normal that more of the engine will be knackard?

Its a mk1 formelE

Any advice welcome

Many thanks

You need to rip it apart and check for damage. Depends how bad the damage to the bearing was and whether the crank got trashed. You might need to regrind the crank, new bearing and leave it at that.

I use a 1/2" ratchet and the 800mm long tool from Laser (via gsf) and do them tight. They haven't come undone yet. Just make sure the spline is fully seated or you'll round the bolt off.

I've got a terrible feeling that they are stretch bolts.  I keep turning and its not getting any harder and the end of the bolt just keeps on pertruding more and more.

Any ideas???

They are reusable. If the threads are good on bolt and flange, I can't see why it would keep spinning???

Okay….    Spend this morning finish the engine swap.  The donar engine is from a polo C the same size, wiht a different carb and a slightly more complex dizzy.  And it will not start!!!!

Its been running after much swinging of the dizzy, then ran ok, if a little fast.  but starting it is a real problem ( we only got it started three time in a hole afternoon of trying)

I've checked and i'm sure the spark is in the right place at the right time and its strong.  I dont know what ot do now????

AND finally it runs.  With a mixture of golf formelE and polo C bits it seems to be running alright.  There was no room for the choke however so, lets hope it starts tommorrow morning.

Photo's to follow.
