inlet manifolds

basically im doing a engine change on my mk1 1.1c to a 1.3 polo gt on carbs
i just need to know if a 1.1c inlet manifold will fit on the gt engine before i start ripping it apart
if someone can help me

sorry dude, no it will not fit.
what carbs are you going to fit? there are a number of different manifolds available to enable you to fit carbs to this engine.

do you know what ones will fit

what carbs?!
im guessing your going to stick with downdraft as you wanted to reuse your old manifold. so you'll be either using single or twin choke. each has its own manifold. the gt engine uses a hydro head and a water heated manifold. these can be found on mk2 golf(small block) and loads of old polos(mk2). the polo manifolds are all single choke, but if you can find one some small block mk2 golf came with a twin choke carb. if you are simply using a vw carb then everything will bolt together nicely, but if you wish to replace with say a webber then you will need an adapter plate.
best thing to do is get down the scappies and bag 2 or 3 manifolds look for the carbed engines, there are literally dozens of polos getting scapped! and its the best place for them if you ask me!! and whilst your at it grab lots of coolant hoses, thermostat housings(theres quite a few variations!) and electrical connectors, and you'll need a mk2 golf(small block) dizzy and amp. i will try and remember which rad i ended up using.
hope this helps, its been a couple of years since i did my conversion!

check out my for sale ad in engine and runing gear section, i have a few small block mk2 golf parts for sale including the mentioned inlet manifold, i also have a 2e carb to get you going and a distributor aswell if your interested once youve had a look at different things you need

lol! thats the boy! the 2G flows pretty damn good! de hedgehog the heater (to improve flow) and leave disconnected. port match and clean up the runners for even better flow.

i have he exact set up as in that picture…..looks 100% identical to mine, right down to the facet solid state pump!!!

anyway, you were on about removing the hedgehog from the manifold??? i have seen it there and left it unpluged and i was thinking about removing it but came unstuck when i realised how would i plug up the GAPING hole (might cause some lumpyness or the ocasional missfire???)

how would i go about plugging the hole up??  is it just a case of using a plate and sealing it on with gasket stuff and bolting through origional holes???

thanks !!

dude just dehedgehog it!!! stick it in a vice and cut the spikes off, file flat( top tip spray wd40 on your file to stop the alloy clogging it up) then pop it back in. polo boys do it all the time.
proper job!

that seems like a good choice  :redfaced:

what else can i do. things like that add up so have you got any other mod's i can do like that??

cheers

i would pair up a decent carb and inlet with a 4 2 1 manifold as a starting point. then change to a gti exhaust system. if you want to make the best gains then really it a p+p on the cylinder head so every little gain counts and adds up to making a difference.

ill try p+p but i havent got the tools to do it, with you saying to get the GTI exhaust, how would i do that coz the polo engine has a cross flow head and the GTI doesnt….would i have to use it all appart fronm the manifold and use my manifold and down pipe, or will that not reach?

would it also be a good idea to get a stainless exhaust manifold….i think there is some on ebay for about £200

and with the intake side, apparently some vauxhall manifolds fit and thy have weber carbs on too, is this true or would i have o look somwhere else ft one, coz i would like to go weber

Never try it because it will never ever fit, different series! :)
