Hot start stalling!

Hi there, not been logged on here for a long time, wondered if anyone could help with a running problem with my 1983 1.1?

Car starts/warms up  from cold as it should and then runs/drives fine when warmed up. However, if the engine has warmed up and then is stopped and left for more than 5-10 mins, but no more than 40-45 mins, the engine will not idle when started again.

It's possible to use the throttle to keep the revs up and the engine will run, but it is rough, the idle hunts and it feels like it is leaning out at times. If I then drive the car at speeds of 50+mph for 15 min or so the problem clears and the car runs fine again. Alternatively if the car is left for 10+mins and then tried again it will run fine.

I have had this problem in the past, but it went away (or so I tought) with tinkering. However it has just came back with vengence since replacing the exhaust downpipe that was badly leaking where it sends some of the fumes back up to the bottom of the inlet manifold, I assume this is significant?
