help engine blown up

hello im knew to this site but can be regulary found on pvwmag forum - my problem is this - i bought my '83 5dr 1300 mk1 knowing that the engine had seen better days - i always planned to build another 1300 but tuned up. last night my engine gave up and is terminally ill, i am now forced to change it but due to lack of time and money, am gonna put in the first engine i can get hold off!! i have phoned lots off places,& most dont want to know unless its a like for like change, others are giving lots of contrasting info - basically i want to know what engine can be dropped in using existing wiring & mounts?
anyhelp would be great,
Stu

Welcome aboard Stu - shame it's not in better circumstances!

I can't help you but plenty of people here will be able to answer so fear not!

Good luck with getting it going again - post some pics of your car when sorted

:D  why thankyou hairyarse (nice name!) i shall post some pics anyway as the car is fine on the outside, its in gambia red? i think this is correct, fairly good condition, with minimal rust, although it is showing its age with well lets call them wrinkles, and a few battle scars, lightly modded with a gti interior & brakes, stiffened and lowered on wide mk2 steels. i love it but need transport so im buying an early mk2 jetta gt, till i can get an engine fitted - most people ive spoken to will only do a like for like swap, so it looks as though it will remain a 1300.

What exactly has happened to the engine?

Hot-Dub of the PVW site (can't remember what his user name on here is) has a spare HK 1.3 engine lying about…

hey steve, yeah i think hes in swansea which isnt too far. i think the engine was my fault - i have no oil pressure light, & i was aware i was losing oil so i kept topping it up untill one day it got ridiculous - there was a massive puddle of oil under the car after it had been sat idling - i had a good check around everything and saw the fuel pump was loose!! doh!! tightened it up but i think it was too late!  a few days later sat in traffic i thought it felt a bit lumpy so i had a good listen and there was a loud knocking rattle kinda noise between 2000rpm and it kinda went after 5000rpm, but when i drove off it was making the noise constantly. so i pulled over and checked under the bonnet.it was running very ruff - throbbing rythmically - i pulled the ht leads as it obviously wast firing on all cylinders, coulndt reach the two under the filter housing but the other two werent firing + it was bellowing out blue smoke!! think its a goner!
is the gt block the same engine mountings, & will it accept my manifolds etc?
oh found another pic
im second on the left

Your Mk1 engine mount bolt straight onto the GT block - there is a little bit of wiring to do to get the ignition to work (easy enough though) and everything else you just your your existing bits for; manifolding, anciliaries, etc...

hi, its hot-dub from the PVW forum, like steve says, iv got a 1.3 engine that your welcome to have but i seriously doubt it will be worth it now as its been sat outside in the wet for about a month or so without spark plugs or manifold. im in bradford in west yorkshire if you are interested tho.

yo hot-dub thanks for the offer but i think ill leave it - gonna find a polo for spares or repairs & swap it myself - or (gulp - wipe back the tears!) sell it!!! dont want to but i cant see it back on the road for a while, i dont really have the space to keep it & ive sent to many good cars to the scrappers (ok they were all written off due to my irrisponsible teenage driving…)!!

Don't scrap it - something will turn up.

If you just want an engine to keep it running, any Polo motor will fit.  Knackered Polos usually turn up regularly for less than the loose change down the back of your sofa so you're bound to find something.

The swap is very easy and took me a weekend (being the first full engine out job I'd ever done and completely unaided).

:P  hey chill - i wont scrap it! was talking bout it with my dad last night, gonna store it at a farm for a bit, we did an engine swap in a mini in a day bout 4 yrs ago - should be able to do this, gonna find a spare or repair polo for around ?50 - ive just spent all my money on a mk2 jetta gt to get me to work and to be honest im not to keen to go back to a 1300 unless its a screamer, but dont really have time or money at the mo so it'll be a standard 1300 if anything.
i may sell it but dunno what its worth?:
black n white mk1 gti interior (patched o/s driver bolster)
gti vented discs on front
jamex springs n dampers on rear
unknown springs n dampers on front (dampers could do with replacing)
faded bumpers
no bad rust spots but fairly beaten up
engine runs but knackered

yeh an engine transplant in a day is easily done, especially if you have somebody else thr to give you a hand.i did mine on my 21st birthday at 4 in the morning very drunk after having a party and had it done by the morning! …but then took it back out anyway to put the gt lump in.
if youv got sumwhere to store it just store it and keep your eyes open for the needed parts to make a screamer. i managed to find a gt lump from a polo website, bought a set of bike carbs for 20quid off ebay and got a manifold made up. most expensive part was the manifold at 170quid but if you know any one thats good at welding call in a favour
