fuel pump trouble
hi,
i need to buy a fuel pump for my 1.3 golf engine and was not sure what kind of pressure needed to run the engine propperly,
i have been told that a FACET SOLID STATE fuel pump would be MY best option and they seem quite good value for money
but some are 3bar - 4bar
and others up to 10bar for the GTI
what kind of pressure will i need
its a 1.3, running a single choke, solex carburettor, jetted for a 1.3
cheers

your pump should be the one that runs off the cam m8

fuel pump
i have fitted a mk3 1995 polo engine to my golf, with the polo it came out of having an electric fuel pump on it but didnt think at the time to take it when i got the engine
so now i dont know what kind of pressure pump it needs to run at :dontknow:

you will also need a fuel pressure regulator as that is what controls your fuel pressure but you dont want to much as it will p*ss out of the carb and you dont want fuel all over the engine bay or you could end up on fire.
try a polo gt fuel pump fused and wired to the ignition with a pressure reg (not quite sure what pressure you want to be running though)

not ideal to have it triggered by the ignition as in a crash it would continue to run and be a fire hazard. better option is a k-jet fuel pump relay, that takes a rev counter feed so will cut out if the engine dies.

that seems ok cheers,
but where do i find one of them, included with the relay (doesent matter bout wiring, got miles of it)
just a small problem, with it being an N model, it has no rev counter, but i am changing the ignition system to a mk2 golf setup so that i can keep my points and apparently there is a rev counter wire with that so would that be suitable or not?
cheers

that would be perfect, rev counter feed from mk2 coil comes from terminal 1 or -ve side of coil, red/black wire right to the fusebox/rev counter/fuel pump relay.
gsf will sell you a suitable relay without a rev limiter:
93592 - ?23.20

cheers,
so all i need is that
k-jet pump or other pump (facet solid state?????) :dontknow:
and regulator ?????
because of the regulator will the pump be sufficiant to run a carbed 1.3 (standard)
where can i get the regulator and the pump from please
scrappy is out of the question unless components not on mk1 golf
cheers

Why not just buy the mechanical pump thats designed to fit the engine?
itll pump the right pressure for the carb ( 4 to 7 psi approx) .
Dont use a gti electric pump its capable of 60 or 70 psi if its restricted and itll chuck fuel all over the place.
Have a word with your parts supplier, tell them the car, the year, the engine and size etc.

its suppose to have an electric pump controlled by the ECU as its out of a later polo (mk3)
and i dont have the ECU or the pump so having to use bits and bobs from numerous golfs etc to replace the pump
someone told me that a facet solid state fuel pump, fused and wired into the ignition would be substantial, clearley not

it would need some kind of fuel pressure regulator I would imagine, you can buy adjustible ones off the bay of e. k-jet one would be way overkill for a carby as said.
I'd imagine even a later rocco/cabrio injection lift pump would probably work with this setup, just need some kind of fuel reservoir (maybe the setup from the same car as the lift pump?) to prevent fuel starvation thru corners

cheers
would this adjustable carb reg be sufficiant
ebay number
120423157549
range of 1-5 psi ???????
i had a look at lift pumps and i came up with simular stuff to a facet pump so would this be alright
ebay number
110392495774
range of 3-4 psi ???????
i cannot find any reservoir's ??
…so i put the relay inside the car, the pump close to the tank, the reservoir???, and the fuel reg anywhere within reach ???
cheers for help mate

look fine to me! but im no expert. the reservoir you can find on MK3 polos, later cabs etc. its just a plastic tank which you put before the main pump, which is then filled up wi fuel by the lift pump plus the return from the engine. gives you a reserve of fuel if when going round a tight corner the lift pump runs dry. gti fuel tanks have a swirl pot inside the tank which does the same job

thanks for help mate much appreciated, means im one step closer to having my belovid golf on the road, the only thing left is to find somewhere where i can get the ignition system from, struggling due to no local scrappies
final thing then mate, how to i wire up the relay, ie what pin goes where and wiring etc, and would i need to put a fuse inline to protect the relay, if so, where?
cheers again

relay pinout:
1 - rev counter input
87 - fuel pump output (fuse this, 20amp)
30 - permanent live
15 - ignition live
31 - earth
as for the ignition system i do have a mk1 electronic ignition loom sat in my garage, but i dont have a suitable vac advance dizzy. only issue is it doesnt have a plug on the hall sensoer wiring,. as i had to nick that for my mates engine when i fitted a mk1 k-jet dizzy to it.
Pins are still there though, you litterally just need a suitable plug houysing that fits your dizzy to pop the pins into

thanks for info again,
unsure of that comment…..
you have a dizzy but not the terminal housing????
i have a housing from a mk3 polo that is apparently the same
what loom is it i.e…between coil, TCI-H and dizzy or what??
cheers yet again

i have the whole loom, but the plastic plug for the dizzy is missing. so its the tci->coil->dizzy loom, but where it plugs to the dizzy there are just 3 bare pins

right ok,
so will that plug into the 3 pin connention off the mk3 polo 1.3 dizzy or plug into any other suitable dizzy with vacuum advance and weighted dizzy
also it needs to be a 1.3 dizzy like you said in a previous post to me so it it suitable for that with other 1.3 parts like the 1.3 tci-h and the coil?
cheers
