fuel problem on my 1.1 1976

right, my car was gettin indicators and brake lights sorted at the auto spk and he told me the car cut out, so put petrol in nd still wouldnt fire up, changed fuel pump to an electric one and sometimes fuel bubbles into fuel filter and car runs, but when drivin it wants to cut out and i have to try keep the revs up or il hold up all traffic, there was like fabric type braided fuel hoses and iv changed the two as they looked old and worn, but after seems the same, theres little bits in the fuel filter i was thinkin maybe the fuel pip is blocked up? any ideas? thanks

I had a problem about 6 months ago, after checking all the fueling system for blockages.. turns out that it was a perished pipe about 6" long just before the fuel filter, that wasn't fuel pipe attal - it was letting air in and starving the car of petrol, which made it cut out..!! Amputated a pipe further along to use and job done - fired up first time :)

Firstly, when you say fuel bubbles in the fuel filter - does it in any way seem that there is air entering the system at some point? - almost looks like fizzy petrol when it is in the fuel filter?? If so you could be having the same problem as me - Be careful with the braided pipes, its hard to know if they are really fuel pipes..

Secondly, if you throw a bit of petrol down the carb directly - try to fire her up (be patient) and she should run for about 30 seconds - just to check all your engine and stuffs is still working properly, that there is no blockages down there.. - its easier if you get someone to help you.. (dont drown the car though !)

Thirdly.. If you are still having problems, With the help of your friend again.. open up your fuel tank (from the access under the back seats - pretty annoying to remove but they do pop off like a paint tin !!) and you will find two metal tubes.. one thats drawing the petrol to the engine, and a return pipe. I managed to check these for blockages by getting my friend to blow down the pipes from the engine (behind the filter on the drawing line) and see if you can feel air.. you will know if you have a blockage - but deffo check all braided pipes.. :)

Hope this helped

also, don't forget to check the fuel filler neck as they tend to disintegrate from the inside and this isn't always apparent from the outside. I have seen what appeared to be a solid filler pipe collapse on removal as it was so thin on the inside!!!

yeah sorry for not replyin in ages like, i managed to take the mk1 down the the garage by my work as it drove just cut out when revs went low, but got the in the end, before that i had taken the braided pipes off as they where pretty fkd, replaced them and still had same problem, but yeah put it in garage and the fella said he just cleaned the up the carb and he said the timing was slightly out so he sorted that, and as its meant to runs on the 91ron which isnt around anymore he said the timiing was alered for that, overall was £25 to fix and it seems fine now, there has been some work done by my fuel filler neck previous and its not an amazin job, im a welder myself so i might dig into it and see hats goin on, my petrol cap sits a little bit lower too so, wana sort it, also anyone know anywhere that cromes? got my bumpers there and id like em cromed, cba jus sprayin the silver, thanks ben
