Fitting VDO gauges and senders

Post

Hi, ive been tempted to get some vdo gauges for my little 1.3 but im not too sure how i would go about fitting the senders? could i just use my existing sensors and just split the connectors or is it not possible on my engines? most people seem to be selling oil pressure, oil temperature and voltage as a set fairly inexpensively, im sure the voltage wouldnt be difficult but how would i go about doing the oil temp and pressure while keeping my existing sensors working?

Cheers,

Matt

I could always have a clock, water temp, fuel, or voltage if oil would be too difficult but buying individually is expensive...

Wiring isn't too hard. You need an ignition live from the fusebox, and a good earth. For a clock you need a permanent live. You then need to run a cable from the sender to the gauges. You need the correct spec sender. I doubt your car has them unless somebody has installed gauges previously.

Usually you can buy a Y or T adapter which goes where the original sensor for the oil light goes. Do a search, there's a fair bit on wiring in the gauges.

If your installing Oil Pressure you want on of these-
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LMA-Oil-Pressure-Gauge-T-Piece-1-8-NPT-Male-Female-M10-x-1-Side-Port-50mm-/300982534300?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4613f5009c#ht_1914wt_1172

If you want Oil Temp, the sender will need to fit directly into the block otherwise youll get a rubbish reading from thermal loss if you put it through a Tee. I didnt worry with an Oil Temp one on my small block as i dont think they warrent it, its mainly for the GTIs and modified motors.

Thanks Chris,
Is it a 1/8" fitting on the block or an M10? becuase ive seen places doing both :S
That hadn't crossed my mind, so maybe I should put a coolant temp in its place

Thanks,
Matt

I have a clock, voltage and oil pressure in mine. The cheap pressure sender has died already tho!

Not sure if 1/8 or 10mm. I used 1/8 on mine but they are really similar so not sure.
