The tried and tested method is to use the pre-79 1100/1300 centre section becuase this is a straight pipe and then mate that up (not as hard as you might think) with the GTI backbox (which I'm guessing you already have?)

can you use a polo g40 manifold / g40 de cat downpipe / gti system ??
If you want performance, go for an Ashley 4 branch tubular manifold/front pipe.
If you want something cheap, flow the standard exhaust manifold bearing in mind that you want the ports slightly oversize in comparison to those on the exhaust side of the head.
