Engine troubles
Ok, not sure where the best place to post this would be so im throwing it out there.
Basically my 1.1 has developed some issues, I was driving along when the engine started to act up, hard to describe but here goes.
Its lbest described like the engine is hitting the limiter but at only 3000 rpm, its really down on power and when you lift off a bit its ok but as soon as you accelerate again it gets stuck going relly slow about 40mph.
I checked oil and it was a bit low, filled it up and it was ok again.
4 hous later its playing up again, probably needs a service but any ideas what i should check, air intake fuel systems?
Any help would be great

Hello Mudwig,
I can help, to begin with though;
What year is the car.
Is it standard.
What carburettor has it got.
Has it got a plstic fuel filter in the fuel line somewhere near the fuel pump on the top left hand side of the engine (as you look at it from the front of the car).
Reply and I'll post again.

Ok, the fuel filler neck was rusty and replaced but this was months ago, so dont know if if there would be any crap in it. Its possible though.
Andy its an 83, engine is totally standard, not sure on carb mate how would i tell?
Pretty sure its a plastic fuel filter but will need to double check this.
Cheers guys

You should be able to see inside the plastic filter as to whether it's full of cr
P
, if there's no filter then it may be cr
P
getting into the carburettor.
If it's standard then it should have a Solex PICT cardburettor - these are very tempermental when they get old - should say Solex on the right hand side of the carburettor but you'll need to take the air filter casing off to see it.
Post back when you've got some info, I'll post in more detail when I get time but an 'electrical service' is probably worthwhile regardless of the fuel situation.
I assume you have a Haynes manual ?

OK
Had my mechanic out to see it today, he says that some water has got into the fuel system via the filler.
I have the proper cap, but the neck has been previously repaired and is on its way out.
So water is getting into the carb and causing the misfiring.
He has claeaned and stripped the carb, and its fine now.
He says I need to get hold of a new fuel filler neck though, and no old ones as they will be knackered like mine, he reckons this is quite common on the MK1 so its possible someone somewhere makes these?
Ideas gratly appreciated? :dontknow:

MudwiG,
I'm suprised nobody else has responded !
It is a very common problem on MK1 Golfs but I have no personal experience.
I would suggest you start a new topic called something like "MK1 Rusty Filler Neck" or put something in Wanted.
Try Richard at Crazyquiff's.

Seems a bit strange that the fuel filler neck was replaced with a rusty one, and that the tank wasn't cleaned out at the time! This is what's giving your problems, by the sounds of things. There is a thread of cleaning the fuel tank out, somewhere, its not such an easy job because its difficult to reach and clear all the dirt/rust out.

Sorry, I should have said that literally the very end of the filler cap was replaced, (where the filler cap attaches area) It was a quick fix to get through an MOT basically.

New filler neck is about ?40 from GSF or ECP . Also replace the connecting hose between neck and tank (about ?8.00) and fit a new fuel filter while you at it. Seeing as you have gone to the trouble of getting a mechanic to clean it out I wouldn't drive it at all until you have fitted these.
Cheers
