Eating fuel pumps

Hi, I'm new to this so go easy!! 

Just bought a mk1 golf 1.3 driver but its eating fuel pumps for Breakfast

Was wondering if any one knew why this is happening!

I'm thinking of just using a Electrical fuel pump but was wondering if any one has done it before on here and how the best set up would be.

You say it is eating fuel pumps,in what way ? As in wearing out the lever arm or what.

Well 1st one was wearing out then snap the end off, put a new one on did about 400miles maybe then one day the car didn't want to start so check the fuel pump and it snapped half way up wear the sping is! 
The bit what snap the 2nd time is in the engine so need to sort that out but don't want it to keep Happening!  

I know it sounds a daft question but are the pumps your replacing defiantly suitable for your engine? Theres not really much to these mechanical pumps and the only wear that usually happens is to the cam inside the engine. You can fit an electrical pump and cap the mechanical pump off with a blank plate.

Yes I think so looking at all the websites for parts,  the 1.3 it's the one with spring that pushes in and out in a Straight movement, 
Like you said not much to them wondering why a new one would go so quick! 

about the Electrical pump seen some inline ones but didn't really know wear the best place to but it is! 
Just wear the pipes are for the Mechanical pump or say closer to the fuel tank? 

Id say fit it to the bulkhead somewhere. Ive not ever installed one tbh so im not familiar with the best practices.

Think I'm going down the Mechanical pump one more time! 

Man at gfs said is there meant to be a spacer block In between the engine and the fuel pump??? Anyone know if this is true? 

Haynes book of lies doesn't show one and I don't remember one when working on small blocks. Think he's confused with air cooled engines that do have a Bakelite spacer/insulator. What do the new ones look like compared to the old one? Try a different brand?

Buy my new old stock Pierburg fuel pump. much better than the cheapo pattern part pumps at GSF. I will even throw in a spare working pattern pump.

Non of my small blocks have had a spacer on the fuel pump.

If you go electric pump it will also need a suitable fuel pressure regulator.

Went for mechanical one again when I toke the Rocker cover off I noticed a few little chips on the camshaft there the pump sits so wet and dry them smooth again hopefully that will sort it out!
