Don't know where to post this, but I need help

I had a service today on my 1.3 golf, and everything seems to be fine aside from needing to change a couple of spark plugs.

I drove my car to work and back, and after about a mile's drive, there was quite a loud sqeaking noise , which sounded like it was coming from the bonnet, I panicked not knowing what it was. Turns out its none of the running gear, As with the bonnet open it's perfectly normal, but as soon as I shut the bonnet with the engine running the squeaking starts, and its making my car sounds like its about to explode. I've looked and I genuinely don't know what it is. Anyone got any ideas? Its only started today.

Cheers.
Josh

Thank god for that, I got told it could be the timing belt. I didnt think it was because I don't understand why it would stop when the bonnet was open otherwise. How did you sort it?

i changed the stay in the end, mine had blue overspray on it anyway. the problem was that it didnt have the rubber donut on it that stops it rattling, you could just nick it off another mk1, or a mk2

Alright, cheers. I've taken the whole rod out for now, so I can check if thats what it definitely is next time I'm out in it. Thanks.

Okay, so it's not the stay rod. I took it off completely and its still squeaking/tapping. I can't see how its the timing belt though. If I even pop the bonnet, and leave it down, so that its not closed, it stops straight away. Then I close the bonnet, and it starts again. Surely if it was the timing belt it would be constant regardless?

going to be a fun little investigation for you now! its obv got to be something with the bonnet you just need to find out what :)

check the catch on the bonnet is free and the spring pushes it forward nicely. look at your washer pipes and anythign in the scuttle near the hinges. have a look at the scuttle tray, they have liek a plastic bit in the middle that sticks up maybe thats touching something. look all over bonnet for any marks where something might have been rubbing, look at the top of the carb and the control cables etc
