Does a weber 32/34 fit???

Can anybody clear this up for me? I have bought a weber 32/34 dmtr to fit on my sons 1983 1.1 Golf. The engine isn't original its a rebuilt 1.3 Polo coupe s engine. I have been told and read some posts on the subject, but not in great detail, that when the 32/34 carb is fitted its imposible to shut the bonnet unless you run it without the air filter on. I havn't managed to find an adapter plate yet but if its a case of not fitting there's no point in looking any more. I have read past posts on the sale of this carb on polo club forum and it would seem the carb had been on a running 1.3 engine, so I'm a little confused. Fit or not fit that is the question?

I'm running either a dmtl or dmtr on mine (not sure which but basically the same save choke sizes) with a small aftermarket air filter, and it's snug but it fits fine.
