choking trouble !!!

hi all.
i have just replaced the oil, the oil filter, the plugs, the leads, the fuel filter and my car will still not tickover with the choke off  :(  it has to be at least halfway out, so was just wondering if anyone had the plug gap settings, the carb settings and any other setting i might need.

thanks in advance :D

Hello veedubber,

How does it drive ?

If you haven't done so already - points, rotor arm, condenser, distributor cap, distributor to Coil HT lead. Pay special attention to the points gap as it is quite small but critical on these engines (0.4mm). Plug gap is 0.7mm - 0.75mm.

Check for air leaks around the carburettor/manifold plates/gaskets.

Ensure the vacuum hose from the carburettor to the distributor advance unit is connected and in good shape.

Check/set the ignition timing with a strobe light (10 deg BTDC) with vacuum advance pipe disconnected.

I presume you have the Solex carburettor, what year is the car ? See also the "What have I done… " thread in Small Block Carb Engines.

Carburettor - looking from the front of the car - on the right-hand side of the carburettor (and to the right of the words Solex/PICT) there are two recessed screws one above the other. The bigger top one is the idle speed adjusting screw (also called the bypass air screw) adjust this first once the engine is warmed up - make sure you know how many turns you adjust it so you can put it back to the start if required - until you get it to idle. The smaller lower one is the idle mixture screw adjust this only if you need to to get the best idle once you have got the bigger idle speed screw sorted out.

You could make the switch to a Weber 34 ICH if it is definitely the carburettor !

If you don't have a Haynes manual - get one !

Hope this helps, post again if you're still stuck.
