Carb problems, fix or replace? please help!

Hi, I have been having problems with my carb. i want to know if i should just rebuild or buy a new one. if so what new parts are needed for a rebuild and what other carbs would fit?

The problem: I will be driving along 30mins to an hour and suddenly the car will lose power and wont idle and i cant push the throttle at all or it will stall. i then have to use the choke as a throttle and with the clutch in the choke pulled out has the car at around 4000-5000rpm. what is going on?

any help appreciated,

will

Hi willsoffe and welcome. Not sure about your problem personally, but hopefully someone will :)

Thanks! Found out about my problems! I have just bought the car and have been having many teething problems.

Among others.

#1 and 2 plug were very loose and could be undone by hand.

#There was junk in the carb and the fuel filter was blocked

#The black base plate had gone because……

#The heat shield was on BACKWARDS! It was the wrong way around so it didnt make an air tight seal so fuel came out and air went in! i bent it back and fitted it with a new base plate and its like a different engine!!!

I have another question though. I cleaned the oil breather filter (k and n jobbie that goes on top of the breather pipe) and there was some white foam in it. what does this mean?

Any help appreciated,

Will

Good stuff mate, glad you're getting there.

about your oil breather filter - i don't believe i have one. The breather pipe is the white circular one if i remember just behind the carb. But mine is just open - and does sometimes cough up a little oil if i've been really raggin the thing. White foam is usually the emulsion caused when oil and water mix. ie if your head gasket goes you may see it on the dipstick. But if its in the breather pipe i don't know what it means i'm afraid.

Can you take a photo of your k&n oil breather filter and post it here? I'd be interested to see it.

Have you got rid of your stalling problem?

thanks!

its a filter that goes on top of the breather tube. will get pics tommorw.

How difficult is changing a head gasket? how much is labour to fit one if its too hard? im not sure wether to take it on myself!

Havent fixed the stalling problem, got a haynes manual today so i will play with the needles and the idle screw and strip the carb down.

Cheers, Will

I'm assured its not a very hard job. I plan to do it fairly soon. good luck with your carb strip down. try to take some pics if you can, i'd be interested to see the job.

Of course there was oil/water mix in your OIL BREATHER FILTER - it's exposed to the elements - DON'T do your head gasket for this because it won't make a blind bit of difference.
