Carb change

Hi guys,

I'm looking for some help and advice…………..

I have a 1983 (A) Mk1 Driver which has a 1.3 engine with (as far as I know) the standard carb. The choke (manual) on this has seen better days and regularly adjusts itself to leave the engine running somewhat irregularly when cruising. This results in constant readjustment of the knob which is a pain in the arse (I've just read that back and want to point out that the second meaning does not apply!!).

What I'd like to know is; can I, a) keep the carb but swap the choke for an automatic one or b) swap the whole carb for an automatic one and, if the answer to both of those is 'Yes' then can anyone recommend a carb/choke set-up to use???

All answers gratefully received!

I wouldn't recommend any autochoke set up   Most are a pain to set-up and cause problems/cost money when they go wrong. Manual choke  gives you the best control/adjustment and has involves little that can go wrong.

What gives you the impression it's adjusting itself? A manual choke shouldn't be able to adjust itself unless part of the mechanism is failing. Once warmed up you shouldn't need to use any choke at all i.e. the knob will be pushed all the way in 8O and no adjustment neccesary.

Ultimately if your carb is past it a weber replacement with manual choke would be your best bet.

Hello Goldhinge,

The Weber you are looking for is a Weber 34 ICH - there are different specs for 1.1, 1.3, 1.5 Golfs.

I have written a 34 ICH Identification/Fitting Guide so you can get the correct one, let me know if you want a copy.

They are on Ebay from time to time and Webcon or FastRoadCars may be able to supply new - or try CrazyQuiff's Golf Emporium.
