car cutting out after 10mins of driving. HELP!

sorted all the problems out i had in the other threads. only thing i havent done is flush the tank out as i have not got enough time to do this. anyother way i can flush out the fuel lines and tank

the car will sit at idle all day long, drives superb for about 10mins, then it starts to hesitate like a slight misfire. and will eventually cut out. managed to start it again straight away but running lumpy on idle again and will cut out after about 2mins

when i did start it back up though with the choke out it was revving much higher than normal and dropped back down.

i only got till tuesday to sort this as a guy is buying it and driving it to london from south wales. i wanna get it right now so i know he will be ok going home. i got 3 cars lined up to buy but cant because i still got this.

do any of you reckon it could be the tank still or some other problem?

Do you have a transparent in-line fuel filter (its a carb 1.1, right?)? You could see if its dirt/rust in the fuel causing the issue, then. It has all the hallmarks of fuel starvation through clogging, though.

Is there a fuel vapour trap/presure regulator on the side of your carb?

They get crap in them which is sucked up to the outlet, that blocks, cuts the engine, fuel stops, bits float to the bottom and you start the process all over again.

I bypassed ours.

the original in line filter was dirty, i changed that and it was then ok. this one still seems ok atm.

whats that vapour/trap thingy look like? how would i bypass it or unclog it

its a 1.3 driver btw

when the car was running fine the inline filter had hardly any fuel in it. but now its about half full, could that mean there is a blockage future up the fuel line on the carb site.

could adjusting the fuelling on the carb be an issue?

i replaced the rubber gasket under the carb after i bought the car, as it had 2 huge splits in it. could the previous owner have adjusted air/fuel mixture to compensate for this split

sounds possible. could be running rich to the point of flooding the engine.

have you checked the coil? see how hot it gets.

with the coil do you just feel whether it is hot with hand ect.

does any1 have a picture of the fuel vapour trap/presure regulator so i can check this out

yep. i had a similar problem with a mk2 golf that turned out to be the coil. it got hot to the point that although not manifold hot you didn't want to hold on to it.
if there was an air leak in the gasket, it would make sense that the air/fuel mix would have been raised to compensate the extra air seeping in. so it could just need co setting. you have got the warm air feed connected?

there is a loose pipe at the back where the original airbox was which is venting to air. do you think this could be a potential problem.

i will buy a new air filter tomorrow to for the original air filter casing. and reconnect the pipe. what do i need to do the co setting or could any garage do this for me.

seem to have sorted this tonight.

was going to run a seperate fuel tank in a 25 litre oil drum piped straight into the carb. as this will eliminate the dirt in tank. he said he just wants to get the car to london, so this didnt matter. as he is putting a vr6 engine straight in it.

we managed to sort it another way.

upon looking at the inline filter it had started to fill up as if there was a blockage. undon the jubilee clips and what did i find. my mate had used the wrong size jubilee, which kinked and therefore crushed the 2 tails of the filter caused a major restriction in flow. linked it back up with no filter as the dirt seemed now existant now and i took it for 3 spins tonight straight after each other for 30mins each time, given it some stick and it didnt miss a beat.

all that hassle for something simple

he is picking it up tomorrow and im going to look at a vr6 tomorrow night.

got ?1300 to spend on one

after all that stressing with getting this car right for him as he said he wanted the car tuesday. he didnt have the decency to turn up and he wont answer his phone.

done my head in now as i was supposed to be buying a mk3 vr6 out of the money tonight. why waste peoples time like this. he kept ringing me all week to see if i had sorted it. then i eventually did and this happens.

i took it off sale and only said he could have it because he said i got the cash, will be there tuesday and will 110% have it

so its running great now. all bits done i was going to do on it. cost me a bit of money to do for bits and bobs but worth it.

so i have slightly increased the price accordingly

from ?600 to ?650

also forgot that i changed a cv gaitor at mot in october, tax until end march.

I always get a deposit, before I take anything 'off market', to secure it. It weeds out jokers and dreamers, and makes selling stuff less hassle all-round.
