can you run a 1.4 mk4 polo engine off mk1 1.3 carbs/igntion

As above

once a mk4 1.4 polo engine has been bolted into a mk1 can you run it off the mk1 1.3 carb and ignition system?

Thanks Tom

If you get a hydraulic 1.3 head from a polo or mk2 golf, and change to electronic ignition using bits from one of these cars (very easy). You can bolt up an ABD 1.4 bottom end from a mk3 golf as these fit the hydraulic 1.3 heads.

Then with the 1.3 head you can use the standard mk1 carb and manifold, although the manifold may need modifying slightly to make fit.

The 1.4 polo head manifold mating surfaces would not allow for the mk1s carb manifold to bolt up properly, so a hydraulic 1.3 head of some sort is needed.

The ABD head is the same as the mk2/3 Polo head so it's fine as long as the carb manifold isn't the early one with the exhaust holes. I think it's '79 onwards that have the same gasket as the Polo. The 1.4 Polo engines are different to the ABD and mk3 Polo engines and have different manifolds.

thanks lads,  the engine is a AUX from a mk3 but i no its the same as in the mk4 polo.  Im going to offer up the mk1 carb to the 1.4 head and see what it looks like

I believe that's the newer engine with the chambered head. I don't believe the manifolds are compatible. ClubPolo is the place to search for info.
