Cam recommendations

Yo,

Sorted the oil pipe problems and have taken the golf out for a run today, its still making a lot of noise from the top of the engine  :(

I adjusted the rockers on saturday and they are all to the correct clearances, I did notice when doing the clearances that the cam is a bit worn out.

I was wondering what my options were for replacement, I could get a s/h standard one but i was wondering if anyone knows of any companies that produce a fast road profile that would be a worth while purchase.

The car btw is a 1272cc early <1983 mk1 CL five door.

Cheers.

Jam.

What do you mean by worn out? - chunks out of the cam-lobes, pitted areas in the hardening on the lobes, etc are bad, simple rub-marks in the pattern of dirt build-up are fine...

The cam lobe does this …

It be buggered. I reckon the oil pipe blocked at some point and starved the can and rockers because they are both in fairly ruff condition. This has been replaced, after a oil flush.

I ordered a spare cylinder head (complete) friday week before last and it still hasn't arrived. Someone is getting a phone call tommorow

Ah, the dangers of not changing the oil    (not you, Jam, I mean the previous owners…).

By the way, there are some faster cams for this engine but, to make much of a difference, you would also need to modify the head a lot, and spend a fair bit of money on the whole engine. The only reason to do this is for racing in a 1300cc class on a track, or to save money on insurance. However,  I reckon that you'd be better off with a bigger standard engine (spend the money on insurance rather than modifiying the 1.3 one) or you could fit a Polo G40 engine (but they are hard to find at this stage).

If you want to stick with a carb, look to the mk2 Polo GT engine. 75 hp. The cam will go straight into your engine and may work OK, depends on your carb setup really. I jumped straight up to fuel injection and used a single point polo engine. I'm now looking to use a 1.4 mk3 golf engine with some of the mk3 Polo GT bits.

Me and my mate did a 1300 engine mod, sent the std cam away to Kent, who machined it for a few quid. Fitted a Webber twin carb with a fabricated mount for the manifold and a performance air filter. it did make a good bit of a differance.

Good Luck
