Bolt on k&n for weber carb

Evening all.. Been searching for ages for a bolt on k&n for my 1.3.. Finally found one, but have worries about if it will cause the carb to ice up?

There is the valve in the standard set up that regulates warm air thru the filter into the carb that stops it from icing up.. The bolt on/stack filter has none of this so I fear the carb may ice up..

Has anyone got one on their car? Must be someone.. You suffering at all from the carb icing up?

what carb have you got fitted? there should be a heater plug built into it to prevent icing. look for a elec connector other than idle cut of valve.

There's no heater element in the Weber for the 1.3 - the two methods of preventing carb icing are:-

1) warm air feed from the manifold to the airbox (removed if you fit a K&N filter)

2) exhaust gas recirculation through the inlet manifold

Our own experience of having a duff warm air inlet is that the heated manifold isn't sufficient to prevent icing - you WILL need a heated air intake as well

Sounds like a serious ball ache.. My manifold is pretty rotton and has holes visible all over it.. Best thing to do then would be to fit a brand new one and see how that gets on.. How about modifying the k&n to allow for the manifold heat to circulate into it?

Run a slightly thinner diameter pipe around the engine on the other side, pickin up heat on the way then I the stack filter?

or just use a K&N filter in the standard air filter housing

I had a bolt-on K&N on my 1.1 which has a weber and it made the car run like S-h-i-t-e. It was rubbish on cold start, even in summer. Best option is to get a K&N Air Filter element for the original airbox - they're pretty unrestrictive anyway!

how do you mean it didn't run well? Just lumpy or generally awful? ie juddering etc?

I don't particularly like the original filter housing, bit of an eye saw!! ha ha… Don't want to smooth the bay, just want to tidy it up a bit a maybe a small dress up and re-paint… Had a few issues with an oil leak recently so going to completely degrease and re-gasket everthing…

Also - if you use a K&N pancake filter, what are you going to do with the oil breather? You'll end up with oil mist all over your dressed-up engine bay

It was lumpy, on cold starts it would warm up and drive for 1/2 Mile then cut out. It might well be fine in the warmer months but not practical for winter driving. I was the same, looks the nuts, sounds awesome but just a pain in the back-side.

I want to do the same with my engine bay, clean it up - respray the metal parts and get rid of oil spills! i have already painted the majority of the metal work!
