Ballast Resistor or Resistor Wire?

I have a 1979 mk1 Golf GTI that has been sitting around for a while now. I used to start it up regularly, wash it, take it for a spin and carefully out it away again, but didn't for a while and then it stopped starting. I recently got back in to it and got it going, but when it warmed up, it wouldn't start again until it cooled slightly. Now it won't start at all. I have located it to the coil producing no spark. After reading further about this problem, I have found that the white/lilac wire does not produce provide the coil the required 9V, but there is a live output from the fuse box on this wire. I don't see any ballast resistor on either side of the bulk head so I am assuming that its a 'resistor wire' rather than a ballast resistor??? (can some one clarify?). As I have restored the car back to original spec. (inc. points and condenser), I want to keep it that way, so how can I go about fixing this problem? My thoughts are -

1) replace the resistor wire, if so where can I a correct one from?

2) pull a ign live and add a ballast resistor in series, again where do i get it from?

my pereference is option1! some one please please help.

I can't answer your questions but if it were mine I would fit a 12V coil and do away with the resistor, as long as the battery is healthy it should start okay.
