At my wits end...

I hope someone can shed some light for me, only the noose in the shed is looking mighty attractive :-)

ive got a 1300 mk1, which up until recently was running fine. then for no reason just failed to start after being left for 3 days.

ive got a spark, fuel, compession and a wet back from working in the pissing rain :-)

ive changed coil, plugs, leads, dizzy cap + arm, points, condensor, recent cam belt, cleaned jets, all the usual suspects etc

sometimes it will fire but only with the dizzy turned fully clockwise, and then only for a short time, as if there is fuel starvation, and it dies and then no life whatsoever.

Please save a marrage and throw some suggestions my way, or the wife may end up in the noose, if i so much as hear, "have you tried this, have you tried that, one more time"  :-)

thought i`d better mention also.

the points were changed about 2 months ago, but when removed this time they had a peak on them. i thought this may have just been due to a dodgy condensor, so both have been replaced again.

also the timing light shows the marks in the right place , but no life until the dizzy is turned fully clockwise….. but this is throwing the timing marks well out, and if you try to return the dizzy back to its normal position, it dies.

when you set up the points did you do them with a feeler guage? i had problems with setting mine up right, what did you set them to?

yep done by a mechanic friend, with feeler guages.

i`m hoping its something really stupid to do with mk1s  that i`m not familiar with :-)

sounds like the cam timing has slipped. mine would only run advanced as the timing was a tooth out.

did you re-adjust and tighten after doing a few miles on a new belt? if not it's prob like wet knicker elastic! Mine was.

if it's 2 teeth out it wont run at all as it'll be too far retarded.

Has it been sat in the very cold?

Ours froze the water pump which caused the belt to jump, and only started with the dizzy moved.

It started with a bit of a clatter as 3 of the valves gained a new design…

thanks for all your replies, i`m gonna treat the belt as the main suspect :-)

gggrrrr

ive checked all the marks.

main pulley lined up TDC & camshaft pulley lied up with mark, so appears not to have jumped a tooth.

points reset after finding they had closed.

still nothing, its driving me insane. :-)

hmmmm

hmmm maybe it could be the coil pack or some damp in the dizzy cap wish i could pop round and have a look.
keep looking for simple things could be a cold start hose loose.
or the uplifter pump on its way out a blocked fuel line perhaps.

golfs are fun golfs are fast ive just seen one go past

engine was definatly at tdc? checked with a screwdriver down #1 plug hole?

hmm. sounds like the dizzy may be shot then!

Electronic igniton kits wont help if the vacuum advance is dead.
