5 speed gearbox??

Please can anyone tell me the best 5 speed gearbox I can fight to my GF code 1300 mk1 driver?
As screaming down the motorways in forth is not doing my fuel comsumption any good!!
Ive been told that one from a polo S might be the best option? but then been told that one from a Mk2 1300 is best? so now Im not sure?
Has anyone done a 5 speed conversion?
I also need to know the gearbox code if possible as this helps when ringing VW srappys

Any info would be most appriciated :)

The mk3 1.4 CL has a 5 speed with the studs to mount onto the mk1 mount. I'm pretty certain they're in the same position, but if you wait until the end of the week, I'll know for sure as it'll be in the car. The ratios are the same as the 8P from certain Polo's. It's got the same first and top as my Formel E box, 3+E, with a better spread of gears in between. I cruise at 90 which is 4k on the rev counter.

Unfotunately I've discovered that the mk3 box I have is only a 4 speed. I couldn't believe that cars of that age only had 4 speeds, but I've not managed to find a 5 speed one yet. I've also had a look on EKTA and all small block 5 speeds have the Polo style horizontal bolts, the 4 speeds being vertical studs like the Golf. So back to the drawing board. I've got some pictures here of how to make a mount from Polo and Golf ones. I wanted to use the larger big block bush with a poly insert so I'll have to make a custom mount.

Bit more in gear response, but I have to say that I like my 3+E for normal use. I'm swapping to a Polo GT box for zooming around, but intend to have an 8P for long distance stuff, assuming I can be bothered to swap them over.

gearbox

So what are the differences between the 1.1 formal E and the 1.1 standard gearboxes? I don?t mean all of the technical specifications and ratios, i mean what will each box do in fourth comfortably. And what are to differences to acceleration? If i can get hold of the formal E box will it be worth changing?

Cheers flash

5 speed out of a Polo 3 single point injection would be my choice

my brother has one in his Mark 1 Golf 1.3

pulls 120mph on the clock with 185/55x13 tyres (on the airfield)

i've got a GT box in my Polo….not keen on it…..it goes well, but it rev's to high in 5th…..122mph on the clock @ 6400 rpm with 185/55x13 tyres (on the airfield, again)

3rd is rubbish…it did 90mph @ rev limiter with the old box….now does 70mph  :(

Makes overtaking on country roads a pain (i.e 50mph to 70mph)

keri keep what u got mate! you can use the mk3 polo boxes (just bolt on your mount), i wouldnt bother with gt/g40 box as no gears and no good for everyday driving especially motorway (65mph=3600rpm) think the gls and genesis (other multi points bar gt/g40) had a bit more leg tho.  them single point boxes wont break!!  you aint gonna get gears smooth unless you fit five speed selector and linkage (selector and rod arms).  if you wanna screamer to get you to work then whack gt box on and make sure you got plenty of clean 75/90 in it!
