The linkage is adjustable.  The official procedure is to use a proper VW "gear stick centering tool" which holds the gear stick in about the right place for neutral (in the 3rd 4th plane).

Having said that - all I do is loosen everything off, get someone to sit in the car with the gearstick held about where it wants to be, tighen it all up and see how it feels.

I think Euro Car Parts od the annoying little "plastic ball" bit on the gearlinkage as this is the bit that usually breaks up - on my first Golf it got soo loose it dropped off and I had to drive 15 miles in 3rd gear!

It isn't this setup…

If this is a small block 4 speed, it is a straight rod change box - All the jiggery pokery is done inside the box, not like the Gti linkage setup.
I think the slop is probably the plastic ball at the bottom of your shifter though.
GSF website lists this which will probably contain whatever it is that is worn:
Pt No     Description
71708 GEARLEVER REPAIR KIT  G1 1.1 9/75 >12/83  ?4.95
71708 GEARLEVER REPAIR KIT  G1 1.3 8/79 >12/83  ?4.95

Hope that helps…

Wiring doesn't pose much porblem - except the temp gauge which I am still trying to work out…

There is a little "hook and ball" type thing on the end of the shift rod but there were about four versions across the lift of the Mk1.  All mine have been small block ones…

Another step closer ;)

Indicators?  Just wind the window down and give hand signals - actually you'll probably need those for the MOT!!
