1.3 water pump / thermostat location

Help! havent got a manual to hand so i canny answer this myself. i need to know wehre the water pump is in my 82 mk1 golf 1.3. we need to test the thermostat as had a minor hiccup today. driving along at normal speed, temp was absolutely fine, then the temp gague goes off the scale, light flashing etc etc etc. turned off the road, stopped engine, temps fine, not dropped any water and the fan hadnt kicked in (fans been tested and works fine by the way!) so now we need to locate the thermostat/water pump cos we think thats the problem, the temp gague in the car has stopped working alltogether by the way. :S

fanks a plenty!

Thermostat is located to the top right of the engine, the radiator top hose joins to the thermostat housing. The waterpump runs of the cambelt so is to the left of the engine, behind the cambelt cover. Removing the waterpump can upset the timing, defintely worth picking up a Haynes if you're unsure what you're doing.

Good luck

oh one more thing the outer casing (the ribbed bit) of the radiator top hose is split. dont know how long its been like this but i think this could also be linked to the little bit of oil in the rad water!!? what do you think? its just a wee bit of grey scum at the top of the level indicator.

sodding old cars!!! will the hose be something easy to source and replace?? it looks like it will be but an easy looking job to me always seems to end up a major trauma to my wallett and confidence in fixing the old gal!

cheers agen.

Not sure a dodgy top hose would lead to oil in the water. If there's just a bit of scum on top may be just old coolant that needs changing. If you change the thermostat (only a couple of quid) you'll need to change the coolant anyway. You'll also need to take the top hose off so a good time to replace it - should be able to get one from GSF or Euro Car Parts, Failing that somewhare like Unipart should be able to help. Just a case of undoing two hose clips and taking it off. Thermostat is housed behind housing that top hose goes onto, secured with two bolts.

Word of warning - get new hose clips in advance - these often fall to bits. Also you may find the thermostat housing is corroded - found a hole in mine when I cleaned it up, although managed to fix with solder. Think you can still get these for about ?10.

Have fun
