The crank and cam pulleys have a woodruff key so will only go on in one position,  fit the crankshaft auxiliary (for the alternator belt) pulley too as this has the reference mark for TDC. The pulley has a dimple in it so it too should only fit in one position, and don't do the bolts up too tight as you will need to undo them in a bit. Line up TDC on the crank with the mark on the pointer above it and then line up the dot on the camshaft pulley with finger that sticks out from underneath at the bottom of the pulley. Make sure your water pump bolts are loose and it can move through its adjustment (ideally the rubber o-ring seal should have a smear of silicone grease to stop it dragging). Now undo the crank aux pulley but without moving the crank then fit your new toothed belt. The belt will tuck in behind the aux pulley just it's a bit tight. Tighten the belt with the water pump until the belt can be twisted about 90 degrees, check this at the front of the engine where the belt is longest inbetween pulleys. Make sure all bolts have been torqued up to the correct setting!

If you need I can scan the haynes manual for you.

Am just having problems lining the crank and cam up to its marks, I can get 1 to line up but then the other feels like its hitting and won't line in,

It may be worth turning the crank 180 degrees off the mark then lining the cam up as the valves could be touching then turning the crank back to its mark

Which pulley do you mean? crank or cam or auxiliary? sign up to VagCat here  really useful.
Got my engine stripped in the dining room at the moment so can check against that if needed.

its the cam pulley, ive got it to line up with the timing marks with this pulley, gonna get the belt on and crank it slowly by hand and see if can do a full turn over
