1.3 Driver - spark plugs always black/sooty

Trying to save me mk1 driver … i have to keep cleaning the spark plugs to get it going , but it runs ok , then try to start it again it is rough , spark plugs all black / sooty deposits … is it time to scrap it / sell it on ??

sounds to me like it needs a service and a tune, dont scrap it, theres probably nothing terminaly wrong with it.

Sounds like its running to rich.
Could be carb wants adjusting or maybe the choke is sticking so its flooding itself,hence the problem with starting it.?…
As axlefoley said i would get a tune-up.
Doesnt sound major so dont give up. :wink:

cheers thanks for the replies , will look at the carb / choke, tax runs out on wednesday and no mot… have to get me finger out  !!

Id say replace the breather pod on the back of the engine block under the carburettor.  If it's still the same, it could be valve stem oil seals.  I'm doing them on my Polo at this very moment, doesn't cost alot ot do but the engine will almost certainly have to come appart.
