1.3 83 driver - will it take a 1.3 polo engine?

The engine in my golf has done 180+k and im doing a load of work on it this summer so i though fuck it i dont trust it any more im getting a new one.

however my mate has a 1.3 polo engine that he ran in his golf for a bit that he doesnt want anymore so i could have it for free and its only done 70k!!

but… i brought a brand new 34 ich webber to go on my engine and i can see from looking at the polo engine the inlet manifold at least i diffrent (pre heated by water not exhaust and my carb wouldn't fit it.) i really dont want to go down the route of selling my carb finding a 32/34 dtmr for the polo engine etc etc, im happy with my new 34 ich.

can i take the polo maifold off and jut stick my golf manifold on ie are the cases/heads any different?? can i use the 70k polo case and jut swap everything eles over from my golf?

my golf engine code is: GF 355544 (its an 83')

the polo engine code is: HK 416132 X

thanks

hi i'm currently doing this convertion on my mk1,
although my is a 1.1 going to a 91 polo 1.3.

so far i've found the dizzy is a different drive and mine had points the polo is elec, water pipe at the rear of the engine is different, exhaust down pipe is different(preheater for the carb polo is elec),thermostat housing is different.oil pressure switch in a different place.

thats it so far but i haven't got the polo engine in yet.so there may be a few more bits.

yeah the inlet manifold is where im currently stuck, looks like the head is diffrent as it lets exhaust gases into the manifold to preheat it but on the polo head this isnt there. I think if im gona use the polo case im gona need to swap the heads over as i wana keep the gold inlet maniofld as i have brought a brand new 34ich webber for the car and it only fits on that manifld not the polo one.

I also saw the water pipe at the back is diffrent thats ok tho as i can take mine from the golf and the polo engine has a working dizzy on it so i can use that.

could you see any potential problems in putting the golf head on the polo case??

thanks for the help

the polo engine has a hydraulic head, no tappets to set of such… much more reliable engine imo… the inlet manifolds arent interchangeable as the HK runs on an autochoke carb… i would say that if you wanted to use the 34 ICH then you will have to make a custom mount for the HK manifold.

very worth while conversion to be honest, i did this conversion on mine and its never ran better… i felt the need for bike carbs though aha! and am now in the middle of rebuilding a mk3 polo GT engine for it

but would it be as effective to use the 34ich on the polo engine or would i be wasting its worth as its effectivly the wrong carb for the job. i belive the right one is a 32/34 dtmr webber.??

the 32/34 is technically the right carb for the job, but thats because of the auto choke etc.... dont see why there would be much problem tbh

so it might be a case of all i need now is a custom mounting plate to fit the carb on the polo manifold. hmmm i have a mate who works on a lathe so might see if he could knock me one up!

Right i've now got my engine in and running,i'm using a dmtl carb it came with the adapter plate to fit a 1.6 golf.
so i got an inlet from a mk2 golf 1.3 as the ones had wasn't going work with the adapter.i then had the adapter tig welded to the inlet,i then used the injection throttle cable linkage bolted to the dmtl and the modifed cable bracket bolted to the head.
as it was an injection engine i've had to fit an electric fuel pump,i now need a fuel regulator to reduce the pump presure.and an air filter to fit the dmtl
i have also fitted the electronic ignition from the 1.3 golf, dizzy, coil, amp and wiring.

i'll get some pic's up tomorrow
