1.1 performance advice !!!

Hi

i'm seriously tempted by a nice 1.1 series 1 i've seen.

Not into speed that much as I have a few other toys for that part of my life

However I do want a golf that is useable so i'm wondering the following

a) Whats the top speed I can expect?

b) At 60 - 70mph how will it rev, i.e will it be screaming

c) Whats the fuel consumption like

Any help appreciated

cheers

Jonesey

Assuming its a 1100 C and not a Formel-E top speed will be about 85-90mph. Not really a long distance motorway car compared to modern vehicles. On a gentle cross country run would expect 40+mpg and an average of @35 overall.

If a Formel-E add a little to top speed and MPG.

If original getting quite rare and worth saving.

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

i have a golf C 1.1. not sure on mpg as the fuel guage doesnt work and not had it too long but i think its about 35mpg.
speed wise, at 65mph its around 3700rpm so i havent tryed to get much higher than that.

I never take my 1.1 above 60. If I'd wanted something to fly down the Motorway I wouldn't have gone for a 1.1.

Slow and steady wins the race. Look after it and it should look after you!

yeah i did a round trip from bristol to reading in it on sat and i stayed at 60 all the way there and back, no problem.
was quite nice at that speed… got to see everything :P

and the fuel wasn't bad which is a bonus. as my last car was a 2.0l mile muncher auto so im used to sitting in the fast lane at 110 lol.

so i would follow cleef's advice and stay for about 60, the engines not screaming and your still gonna get to where you wanna go.

Ive got an '83 1.1, standard engine with a K&N filter element. Will cruise at 60mph all day long sipping away - besides the gti is for thrashging not the humble 'c'.

Haha yeah there are some serious plus sides to having an old car, ok so might have repairs to make every now and then but a Haynes manual and a set of spanners and your sorted :) It never seems to be screaming that much to me :s or i could just be oblivious to it haha

80?

I can't imagine how my 1.1 would react if I got it up to 80.

Something somewhere would explode.

I can get 90 from mine, i wont take it further, but it also doesnt seem to be screaming?
But fuel economy at the minute is dreadfull its running far to rich :(

what you can get and what you are willing to go too are two different things..

not many people will leave there foot on the floor for half hour on a motor way and thos that do end up paying for it.

top speed and recommended speed are a couple of different things lol.

my formel e  is quite comfy at indicated 80?

god knows the revs as i haven't got a counter lol  but it doesn't overheat, rattle etc.  Then again it's done 130k now and the engine has never been apart so it was obviously well run in by the first owner!!

i get between 30-50ish mpg depending on time of day, weather and my mood.

with a full load at 50-60mph it'll be about 34ish.

just me, myself and the goof at 70 she'll average about 40ish

tbf the small block was well over-engineered in it's early guise, so assuming you keep it serviced and topped up then it should see 80 all day without a problem.

Jon.
