If your on about the green cap on the side of the gearbox, easy bud, usually remove it to replace the release bearing, remove the wheel, get a flathead screwdriver and tap it with an hammer to piece the cap, then pull it away, refitting is easy, place cap and use a mallet to press it back by tapping all round the cap.
Pete

I think you are talking about the driveshaft flanges.

I have just done these on a 020 gearbox as I changed the 100mm flanges to 90mm ones to suit my shafts.  There is a large outer seal and a small inner cap.

You will need to unbolt the driveshafts from the gearbox the center cap is very easy to replace.

The outer seal will mean you have to remove the driveshaft flanges.  Behind the inner cap is a C clip once removed the flanges should pop off be careful as the flanges have a spring behind them.

You may need to fabricate a tool to aid refitting the flanges as the springs are pretty strong.

Have a look in the haynes manual the tool is easy enough to make. I made a flat plate with 3 holes drilled in it.  The center hole bolts into the center of the shaft and 2 outer bolt push the flange in.

I did my box while it was out of the car so I cannot comment on how hard the outer seals are to do with the box in the car but I imagine its tight.  If its just the inner cap you should be fine.

The GSF part number for the flange kit is 31180 and are ?9.25 per side.

Bear in mind this is for an 020 gearbox as I have a mk2 engine and box fitted I dont know what the difference is with the mk1 box.

I hope this helps a little.

If its not broke....I will break it
