which replacement shocks?

I really need to replace the shocks (and possibly the springs)on my Gti. apparently bilsteins were offered as an optional extra when new? if this is the case does any body know the model or part number. furthermore, has anybody had any experience with GAZ inserts or coil overs

in the past i have used boge gas replacement inserts you can pick them up for around ?20 a corner nice feel to the car i thought
