which front suspension comes with full struts, not inserts
I am looking at new suspension, but I have noticed that some kits are just insert only on the front struts
Ideally I would like to replace the struts. Do any kits come with full struts or will I have to get new ones from a dealer?
I don't want coilovers as it will be too harsh on the roads around here!
cheers

pretty sure you can get full kits, that arent coilovers, see link below. They all appear to lower, so will therefore stiffen the ride up, which sounds like something you dont want.

So choice is either main stealer or 2nd hand from usual sources.
If replacing suspension, then make sure you get febi or main stealer top mounts.

I want the ride to be a little stiffer than normal and probably a 40mm drop, but I just find coilovers way too harsh
I used to have Bilstein on my last Mk1, and that was fine, although people in the back didn't think so

Just bought new front and rear Bilstein OE shocks, Eibach springs, rear Rallye bumpstops, front powerflex bumpstops, new dust covers, new VW top mounts
did the rears last weekend
decided to do the fronts today. spent most of the day trying to find somewhere that sells 22mm swan neck ring spanner (with no luck), bought some spring compressors anyway.
Took the struts out, faffing about using allsorts to try and get the top mounts off (with no luck)
Cleaned up inside the turrets, got rid of all the rust, put some kurust on and then stone chip
Had another go at getting the struts apart, and I then had a look under the dust covers on them and they're goosed. really corroded, no threads left
So now it looks like I am going to have to get new struts anyway
It would have been cheaper to buy a Koni kit, which is what I really wanted anyway, I just thought I can't afford it at the mo
I did look at the koni strt kits but they are insert only. Anyone know if the top adjustables include the strut itself or are just inserts?
Anyone got any good suggestions
I am properly annoyed. even the sun isn't cheering me up. I might just go to bed

or have them blasted & coated. Might be worth getting a pair
of second hand used ones and doing the same?.
You would have thought that someone would do a reproduction
of the originals? all I have found is lowered ones / stiffer ones
great if you are modding a car, but not if you are keeping it standard.
Good luck chap.

which ones did you manage to find?
I am running eibach springs so it may be better for me to get lowered ones
cheers

and re-painting the struts. Got new top mounts
ball joints, wishbones, etc.. so will have
to make do with what I have.
If you find any, let me know!

I thought you had found lowered or stiffened ones and I was just curious which ones had full struts not inserts
If you know of any let me know

Jools - I have spent the last couple of weekends doing the same thing. You can get a 22mm offset ring spanner which looks to have the right angle of attack at Brands
However you have to buy the whole set - ?17 approx….

The new struts were fitted with oil shocks are were binned in favour of the Koni item . Shame they are so expensive now .
