Why aren't they behind the wheel arch? Is it Because I need to fit GTI brakes and struts?

as to rears, you could add spacers to bring them out level..
Here's a pic of my old GTI it was ET23 all round, so popped a 5mm spacer on the rear to give an ET18, looked about right then

as jim said, make sure everything is tight - a reason that they may stick out could be because of fouling on calipers etc. make sure the wheels are flush against the disk, with no fouling.
cheers

wheels
Did notice yesterday will i was fitting them, the front passenger side looked pretty much ok and just under the arch while the drivers side looked out a bit, yes maybe i didnt secure the wheel and tighten the bolts properly.
Also, did the changing quickly because it was getting dark.
Whats going on with this 'Summer'?

arches
Was your car originally a Golf C?
Those GTI arches, do there actually extend the arch making it look wider?
If so, would be a good solution to my problem.

checkout poject rat in my sig, I've the set up the camber so that the wheels both toe in at the top, that may be your issue if one is sticking out further at the top. a good way to check this is to put a spirit level against your wheels and make sure that they are both at teh same angle, if not the camber needs adjusting
Might be good to post up a pic mate so we could help you out quicker

also the rear will always be narrower than the front as the track is smaller by design.
on the offset front a et of 38 is not always correct, you need to match the et to the rim width, I have a 6.5" wide rim with a et of 38 BUT I have added a 5mm spacer on the front and a 6mm spacer on the rear to make the offsets ET33 on the front, and ET32 on the rear.
Lawsy, you sure they were et23? iirc they only come in et28 and 38, my old turbros were 28 and sat right on the arch like yours.

umm haven't put my hands on the car yet apart from fitting the BBS wheels. My next project, got too many on my hands right now. And bought the littlle monster not that long ago.
Thought I might post this tread, because its seems a bit odd the front wheels.
