wheels tight against calipiers

hi everyone i have an 83 driver with original brakes,
i have just got my dream wheels (allycats) and the offset of these is -7
so when i bolt them up the fronts are tight against the calipers. im
temporarily running 9.5mm wheel spacers on the front so i can use the car
but i need to some how get slimmer brakes or grind down the existing ones
what have you guys done before? spacers are not an option because the
amount of poke without them is only just legal

is it running the original driver brakes with the square pads? if so you could try mk1 1.5-1.8 calipers and carriers, then you can fit vented 239mm brakes (or solids if vented dont fit)

make sure you get early carriers as the late ones have a big hoop round the front which reduces clearance.

not 100% if this will help, can you get pics? in an ideal world meet up with a guy who has a mk1 gti and see if wheels fit

yes original brakes, would the 8v mk2 gti calipers and carriers do the job as im breaking one at the moment?

Don't think the carriers from those will fit as the bolts are further apart on the hub.
You might be able to use your existing carriers with them though?
If not you need either VW1 brakes or carriers from an Audi 80 old model I believe.
There is 20mm difference in the distance between the bolts- you can get adaptors for about 30 quid a pair though.

the mk2 doesnt have carriers if its 239mm brakes, the calipers are the same as mk1 items above so those plus mk1 1.5-1.8 carriers will do you.

vw1 are mk2 golfand polo poverty spec only, they weren't fitted to the mk1 they all had vwii calipers as were higher spec 8v mk2, mk3, polo g40 and plenty other vw/seat models.

carriers any mk1 golf, scirocco or cabrio 1.5-1.8 will do as will mk2/3 polo. well, the very early mk1 1.5-1.8 have te same brakes pretty much as your 1.3 ones now, but you can easily tell look for 'VWII' stamp on the caliper plus pads are totally different shape

Finally had time to check the mk2 brakes they have the vw2 stamp on them so do you reckon they will go straight on the driver?

the calipers will yes! but you need mk1/cab/rocco/polo carriers without the hoop
