Wheel Studs?

Just had a mate give my car the once over.
He mentioned that he thought the wheel studs were too short for the alloys - he said that they were probably the original ones designed for steel rims. They only tighten up about 5 turns.

Should I have longer ones for the alloys?

I doubt you have more than 5 turns on the other end of the stud, so it does not really matter.  4 is plenty.  A general rule of thumb is that 3 full threads is enough to reach the full strength of the screw or stud.  You don't always have perfect threads, so you add one more and get to four.  Having extra threads just lets you chew some of them up and still be okay.

Hi,

I have the opposite problem, a previous owner had put some 5 spoke alloys on the car so even though i got a mint spare wheel that seems like the tyre has never been used and the wheel is in immaculate condition i still can't use it if i get a flat because the bolts that are on the car now are for alloy wheels so when the steel wheel is put on and bolted up correctly the bolts are too long and have ventured into the hub on the rear and so will turn a certain amount (less than 90 degrees) and then the wheel stops.

So if anyone has got a set of original bolts for one steel wheel that they don't want or don't need then let me know please! :)

Thanks
