Wheel offsets - MK1

Hi,

I am looking at a set of 7x15 4x100 ET25 Borbet A alloys at the moment.

HAving discussed this with a few people some say they will rub and that a min of 30 ET can only be used and some say they will be fine  :dontknow:

What are the do's and don'ts of alloys on a MK1 in terms of sizes in particular offsets.

Has anyone got Borbets or alloys similar to the above in terms of size already on their MK1 and how are things working out?

Thanks.

Mike

you can run them, but depending on suspension, load and tyre size will determine how much rubbing you're going to get. i ran 185/55/15 rear and 195/50/15 front. -40 rear and -70/80 front. had to fold the metal lip up into the arch and cutaway the plastic arch. only got a bit of rubbing with a load going over bumpy ground, but nothing that would shred the tyre.

These are 15" though and an extra 5mm of ET.

Seems to be more trouble that its worth but can anyone comment for definite on what is the guideline?

you should pm cam 80 he had 16" ones on his car. ask him what offset he had and if he needed much work done to get them on. nice set of wheels  :D

13/14/15/16" isn't really the issue so much as the rolling radius, tyre width and offset. suspension set up will make a bit of difference.
what 'guideline' are you on about?
i'll give you one,
to absolutely minimising the possibility of rubbing, stick to standard offset, rolling radius and tyre width.
personally, i'd go no lower than et33 and no wider tyre than 205 (though not this combination) and always try to keep rolling radius as factory intended. an et 35-38 with 195/50/15's should give minimal chance of rubbing.

Sounds like good advice and good enough for me.

33 et it is as I could not be bothered ruining my motor by cutting arches etc.

right ill add my 2p…

im currently running 15 x 6.5J BBS RJ wheels on my mk1 golf

these are ET33 running 195/50/15 tyres…

the car is sitting on FK konigsports and lowered a fairly reasonable amount, i have had to rock some negative camber on both wheels to stop rubbing on the arches.

Smaller tyres are definatly the way forward, 175/45 if they made them would be a far better option…

also the arch lip does need cutting and folding as that will give you an extra few mm's

i get big rubbing off the arch over potholes and very enthusiatic cornering which puts me off, im looking at getting 175/40 or 45 for my new 15x7 ET30 wheels coming this weekend or next week as i will definatly need teh extra room

and before any says raise the coilies… its not gonna happen :D
