if front its not for the average DIYer, you need proper tools otherwise you kill the bearing. heres a vortex writeup, its for a later Golf but the same general procedure applies for a MK1:

just done all 4 of mine.

rears easy , just knock the old ones out anduse a socket to knock the new ones in.

fronts - better to use the local garage to push the old ones out and the new ones in. you need a good press or a very good home vice set up and drifts that fit over the bearings so you dont damage then as you refit.

?? cost ??

very cheap for both front and rears, got mine from GSF and had change from ?35 for all 4 sets

its for the rear bearings on my 91 cabby. So this is easy enough job for the novice then?

very easy if you have some basic tools.

remove wheel, dust cap, locking pin nut and washer.

remove drum and drop the bearing centres out into the bin. using a drift ( or flat blade screwdriver with the metal all the way through the handle ) knock the outer races out of the drum - there are 3 cut outs in the bearing housing for you to get the drift on.

clean the drum thoughly with cleaner and the bearing seats - get the old grease out which will have bits of all sorts of crap in it.

light smear of grease ( high temp/pressure so it dont melt onto the brakes !!) onto the outers of the new bearings and fit into the drums. use a well fitting socket or drift to knock them home. make sure the socket only makes contact with the flat face of the outer and not the taper!

smear the taper bearings with new grease and fit the drum back onto the hub.

refit washer and nut. tighten so no movement can be made in and out on the hub shaft, then using a small screw driver undo the nut 1/4 turn at a time until you can just move the washer with the screwdriver tip.

refit lock pin cover and pin, fill dust cap full of grease and knock on.

wheel on and do the otherside.

took me an just over an hour to do both sides on the drive at home.
