Wheel bearing sorted - no more flub!

huzzah!

I have replaced a front wheel bearing and can confirm that it is a huuuuuuuuge pain in the  8O

However - the flub has gone. Which is good  :D  Now I can hear the noises coming from the rear wheel bearings  :banghead:

Arguably this is also a good thing  :?

They're a lot easier to sort  (see latest Golf+ edition)

Top tips for front wheel bearing removal;

  • get a ruddy great breaker bar
  • get a set of bearing drivers
  • buy the comfiest knee pads you can find, you'll be down on them for a while  :roll:

I'll have pictures once the films have been processed (now there's dedication to old school - my camera is as old as my golf)  :lol:

yep, would advise getting a set.. I used a peice of axle stand tubing but took about 20 minutes each to get the runner in the hub.. bearing driver set would make it a 5 minute job and you'll know it'll be in straight

I just had the rear bearing done which is great but now the noise is gone I can hear all the other bumps, creaks, grinds.......

lol its non-stop, get one thing done and another arises, some words of wisdom there Ali especially the knee thing did three of the four one day and could hardly move for a week :roll: . i know its not ideal but i use the bearing you are taking out to drive new runner in, i know its not ideal and you can guarantee its gonna take you some 'good' time to get it in straight but alas i dont have one of these bearing driver set, where do you get em from and how much are they?

Tools and advice

Yep - that's where I got mine from.

Make sure you have a decent heavy hammer as well. My bearing was well and truely lodged (reassuring I suppose), and needed some pretty heavy blows to get it moving. I used somthing that looked like a club hammer on a diet - heavy but manageable.

Also - there are two circlips to remove to get the bearing out - needle nosed/pointed pliers will do it, but a decent circlip remover might help - mine were a little rusted in.

I did try to use the old bearing shell, but, ahem, I'd rather mangled it in trying to extract it so it wasn't up to much. :oops:

Also - in removing the hub you will end up with one half of the inner section of the bearing lodged on the hub (VERY lodged) with precious little metal to grab to get it off. At this point you need a decent two legged puller AND some way to prevent damage to the hub splines… not easy :|

AL's top tip - use a dremel and cutting wheel and cut through the old bearing ALMOST but not quite through to the hub. Then insert a screwdriver in the channel you've cut, and smack it with a hammer - PING! the bearing wil fracture down the cut you've made, and you'll be able to remove it using the screwdriver to lever it open.   :D

I will post pictures once I've got them.

Oh - and get the bearing kit, not just the bearing. It comes with replacement bolts for the wishbone ball joint, and a new axle nut.

For reassembly - get the driveshaft into the hub FIRST, then stand on the wishbone to get the ball joint located, THEN bolt the suspension strut back into the wing, and only then can you remount the disk caliper. If you're planning to bleed the brakes you should already have a spanner the right size and you should have squirted WD40 on the bleed nipple to free it Aaaaaages ago  :banghead:

And don't forget to replace the brake disk guard before inserting the hub - or you'll end up with…a spare brake disk guard  :banghead:

Finally - prime the missus to bring tea at 45 minute intervals - this will prompt you to check the manual….

Well i think the noise coming from my cab is the wheel bearing. Did you ever get the photos? How much is a two legged puller?
