What do you think to these braking options?

OK then Ladies and Gents,

Just looking into the braking upgrade options for my MK1

I understand there are several options.

1. Complete set up from see list below ,Discs,Calipers,Sliders (256mm Set-up) (Will the standard MK1 brake hose fit these calipers)?

Audi 80 quattro (83 to 85)
Audi 90 5-cylinder (85 to 87)
Audi Coupe 5-cylinder (85 to 88)
Scirocco 16V (if you can find one !!)

2. MK2 16V discs, MK2 16V Calipers, Audi 80 Sliders (To hold the space)

3. MK1 gti spec brakes - Disks, Calipers & Sliders

I've recently bought a caliper seal kit for my old ATE calipers, but on closer inspection I've noticed the discs are looking rather thin and the pads seem heavily glazed!

I'm currently considering cutting my losses and putting my money towards the right disc and calipers?

Please let me know your thoughts and experience on these options?

Thanks

Drysponge

If it was me I'd just put Mk1 GTI ones on, as they are a straight fit and there's still a lot around. It'll be plenty of braking power for any non GTI like yours. (I'm assuming you're just doing 'normal' driving and not racing around like a man possessed?  ) I've just bought and fitted reconditioned ATE calipers (the entire set-up ready to bolt on) from my local Motosave shop, but could've easily upgraded to GTI ones.

Thanks Diesel dubber! (':D')

I can see the advantage of choosing a set up where I can simply "BOLT ON"

As you say I don't drive around like a "man possessed" so I should be OK!

Cheers Diesel dubber!

1 & 2 are the same, the only difference is the early 256 calipers have a smaller bleed nipple than the later ones.
apart from that Scirocco 16v discs, pads & calipers are the same as MK2 16v 256 setup, and yes, the MK1 hoses will fit either setup :)

As you say, with the MK2 calipers you still need the early audi 80/scirocco 16v carriers. Can get suitable calipers from other modesl in the VAG range, Passats up to 97 are a good source in the scrappers, plentiful and almost all of em are gonna have the 256 calipers you need.

I have this setup on my cabby and its a direct bolt on fit, just a case of trying to source those rare carriers that are in good nick!  I got a pair of calipers n carriers for ?70, thats about the top end of moneys I'd pay for a set

Thanks Rubjonny

Am I write in thinking you can bolt on a complete ASY from a Passat up to 97.

That's disc's,caliper & carriers for a 256mm set-up from a passat up to 97???

Thanks again Rubjonny!

no sorry, just the calipers, discs & pads. regardless of where you get your 256 caliper from you still need those rare audi 80/scirocco 16v carriers, this is the only MK1 specific part you need though :)

edit: oh and be aware you can get 256 calipers for solid discs, you only want vented 256 calipers. the discs are easily identifiable one way or the other though :)
