Weitec Coils on MK1 Cabrio (with pics)
I could use some advice on this subject.
My 1993 MK1 Cabrio is running a Weitec GT Coilover kit.
Car has 15'' BBS RMs with 195 50 R15 tires.
RMs have 1,5" lips (standard RMs have 0,5" lips).
It looks ok, it's low enough, and you can see that there is almost no clearance between the tires and the karmann wheel arch kit.
So, the problem is that the car is very stiff, specially on the rear.
Here are a few pics of the coils on the rear:
And another pic after I lowered the car a bit, trying for a softer, less compressed, spring:
To be honest I have had it with this setup. Low cars are cool but if this means that it's a board to ride then this setup is out of my car.
Anyway, I have two questions:
1. Do you see anything wrong an the way the coils sit on the car? What about that small coil being compressed all the way?
2. Based on you experience (setups that you have and that you like) what would you recommend for a car that can be driven daily? I was thinking Koni Sports with Eibach Springs but I'm not sure about this…

That kit is very hard - I have a Weitec Coil over kit on my mk1 (adjusts dampers as well) and I love it.
You will not get it to be anything other than a very hard ride.
If you want more comfort then H&R do a comfort kit which lowers (about 15mm higher than yours is now) and gives about a 25% stiffer ride. I fitted this kit to the wifes cabby and she is very happy with the comfort of the ride. I fitted eibach antiroll bars and poly bushes at the same time - still the single best mod you can do to a MK1, for me it rates above changing the springs/dampers for the effect it has !!
Forgot to say the H&R kits do not come with full front struts, they are inserts, so yours need to be in good condition or get some new struts. I would also replace the top mounts at the same time…

Or that the Weitec Coilover kit (that you say that have and love) is very hard?
I assume that this is true for the Weitec Coilovers.
I had a Weitec GTN kit before I moved to GT and, at the rear (the GTN is equal to the GT at the front; the difference is the rear) the car was much more confortable.
What shocks are you using with the H&R kit?

BTW my car as H&R anti roll bars, poly bushes and also an anti approximation bar:

The Weichers anti aproximation bar (this one is alloy)

You did mentioned loving those. Would you say that they are OK for daily use? Or, as you said before, I should stick with the H&Rs?
I checked H&Rs out and they are the "H&R Cup Kit" and are about ?400. This is roughly the same price as the Koni Sport Kit.
I did find a pic of a car running the H&R Kit and it sits a bit high. Oh well, low and just a bit comfortable seems to be impossible.

my mate has FKs on his car and they are hard as hell. I thought my spine was going to break. I bought cheapy ebay jobs and the ride is actually pretty good and cant really fault them. Not too hard at all. and at ?200 if they break i will buy some more. It seems alot of the more expensive coilover companies think that British roads are smooth like race tracks. how wrong they are

The more I read about this the more it seems that I was given great advice.

I'm currently on holidays but when I return the weitecs will be replaced by H&Rs.
It's gonna be a while but I'll post a pic when I'm done.

There are four different spring loadings to choose from depending on what it says on the vin plate on your cars slam panel.
I hope you kept your original front struts because you will need them for the front !!
I have some extra VW original new front struts. I got them recently from VW. Part number is 171412329A.
The Sportline is using the "H&R Touring Cup Kit" or the "H&R Sport Cup Kit"?
Also, can you recommend a store to order the kit?
