weird rattle

my mk 1 golf has a rattle that comes from the drivers side from every time you go over a bump it rattle ive checked all the front suspension and everythings tight and not broken but if your braking the noise stops any suggestions on what it is?

Sounds like the brake pad fitting kit (anti rattle shims) are either missing or weak. Obviously when you brake the pads aren't loose anymore and it temporarily stops rattling.
