We have lift off.....NO not as we should!

Having real probs at the moment with my car. The timing is all out, I have problems starting the car sometimes takes up to 10 turns, so ( new Battery purchased) but it has been back firing  : ((( I have problems with the revs staying at 1000……drops and cuts out ( have had to increase them to keep the car ticking over)  but it is all getting worse, I use the car everyday for work so need it sorted !….So where do I start please ?  Guessing the usual of spark plugs and filters ??

It's a GTi so I assume it's not carbs.
