TSR Discs

Post

Hi everyone,

I have a TSR big brake conversion on my mk1 gti. I have the 270mm discs as I running 14" wheels.

My discs are shot and need replacing .

Anyone know where I can get some discs to match? Or do I have to go to TSR and pay through the nose? My mate works at an engineering place so could turn some discs down if there was an option of finding a bigger disc with the same width, offset, bore hole and stud pattern?

Has anyone had any success in replacing the 270mm discs without going through TSR?

Basically any disc 270mm or bigger with the same width, offset, bore hole and stud pattern!

Thanks for your help!

I heard that some people just get 280 discs & then get them machined down to 270.
I don't know if they would work or not but some MX-5's have 270 discs.

Which 280 discs do you mean? As I can't find any that match the tsr specs for pcd, offset, width, and bore hole!   :(

I did look at the Mazda mx5 270 ones, they match on pcd, and width but the offset and bore hole is out!  O_o

Tsr have been very clever here! Making sure it's very difficult for me not to buy a new set off them!!

I remember people having this issue with the TSR 270mm kit back in the nineties.

At the time you could buy an Autocavan kit or a TSR kit.. the difference being that Autocavan used a G60 disc and turned it down but TSR used a disc of a Rover or Datsun that was then machined to suit.

It was all to do with offset. The Autocavan kit's caliper mount was a little bit of a bodge and often required the hub carrier to be modified with an angle grinder to fit. The TSR kit, however,  bolted straight on because of the difference in disc offset (top hat height)
At the time the price of G60 discs was sky high anyway so the issue of replacement discs wasn't a problem as both the Autocavan and TSR replacement discs cost the same..

Look at Rover 276mm discs.

G60 discs, Someone also told me Calibra turbo disc.

I did start looking into it but decided against the 270 brackets because of how hard it is trying to find the right discs.

Right then, I seemed to have solved the problem. Or at least found the problem anyway!

I rang TSR, they were not very helpful, but did quote me £162 + VAT for the 270mm Discs im after  O_o. I then spoke to black diamond, who make the discs for TSR. The gentleman who works there, Simon, was very helpful  :thumbs: He confirmed that they make the discs for TSR and he gave me the exact spec of the discs. For anyone thats interested here is are the details;

Rover 800 V6 discs
282mm Diameter
21mm Thickness
52mm Overall thickness
65mm Bore Hole
4 x 114.3 PCD

To get them to fit the mk1 golf, black diamond turn them down to 270mm, and re-drill a 4 x 100 PCD into the discs.
Everything else is the same!

Now that I know all the dimensions etc, I am going to buy a normal set of Rover 800 discs and get my mate at his engineering works to turn them down to 270mm and drill in a 4 x 100 stud pattern. For a total cost of around £60!  :)

Hopefully, this will be of use to everyone who has TSR discs. Im sure any engineering firm will turn discs down and drill 4 holes for a small fee. Making a HUGE saving over what TSR quote!

Nice work mate. Shame on TSR for charging such a mark up.  :P

I should be buying some discs this week and handing them to my mate to turn them down and drill my new pcd.

Will let you know how I get on!

My uncle works in a brake disc factory as a manager. He told me any disc I ever wanted to give him a ring and he'd get it much cheapness. I have never actually called the card in as I've always been able to find off the shelf ready to go items. In this case if you have to get discs machined I could ask him if he has the right pattern part for the dimensions listed?

You want
270mm Diameter
21mm Thickness
52mm Overall thickness
65mm Bore Hole
4 x 100 PCD

Oh I can't edit the post!!
So I can add a bit more info on brake parts
the following site lists brake parts and gives a lot of dimensions of the items out as well
http://brakeparts.co.uk/#page=parts&pageSection=BDF&mancode=ROVE&brand=ROVER&model=800+SERIES&modelversion=800*(92-99)+825+%26+827+V6

If you select the magnifying glass it pulls up a tech drawing of the brake disc.

FWIW there is a 262mm disc for the same car so I would guess that going on the fact that most pads don't go to the edge of the disc and that this company list them at £15.91 each that might be a considerably cheaper and easier way to go!

That would be great if you dont mind? Would be alot easier if there was something ready to go, rather than having them machined down.

The dimensions listed there can be +/- 1mm if there is something that fits, or gets close!

Thanks

Hi all

I am having the same problems trying to find replacement TSR / Black Diamond? 285mm discs without paying silly money for them.

Can anyone help?

Resurrecting this post as it's been three years since the last posts and I'm now in the position where I have a TSR 270 converted car, MOT stated they're looking a bit tired, but TSR are no longer selling the replacement parts for the upgrade.  This is what they said on Friday

""Hello Dave,
Thank you for contacting TSR.
As we no longer stock the parts for the brake upgrade listed in your invoice, we would be unable to supply you with those parts.
Other than the usual trade part supplies, we don't have any options available for aftermarket brakes on a MK1 Golf at this moment in time.
Any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

So I'll take the old one's off the car, get them measured up, source some Rover 600 ones, compare  and contrast and then modify as mentioned above.  Will provide mod drawing and part numbers etc.  Should be able to do in the next month or so.
