Total Brake Failure

I've recently gotten a 1983 mk1 gti from a friend thats already had the scirocco brakes converted but it appears I still have the origenal power brake booster and master cylender. today I noticed the brake peddel was getting squishy and I tested the brakes they locked up fine and did what I expected but when I turned the car off I slowly pumped up the breaks to check presure and they stayed squishy. when I turned the car back on the brake warning light on the dash was on and they brakes worked but they were VERY questionable to the point i had my hand on the e-brake (which works despite the conversion thankfully) so question being what went out t he master cyclender or the power booster? when i push in the brakes it makes a air sound whooosh but not totally sure.

If your brakes feel 'squishy', its sounds like there is air in the system, or possibly a leak? Have you checked for leaks?

squishy

I haven't had a chance to get the car up on the hoist but I have checked the brake fluid and checked for misc liquid puddles under the car after pumping the brakes and haven't found any puddles if there was a leak would it leave a significant amount of brake fluid on the ground? also by squishy i  mean when I press the pedal to the flood the brake light comes on and Now it stays on all the time.???? ya for having other daily drivers as the brake system needs some love.

Sounds like you have a brake fluid leak to me. Your brake warning light on the dash is to tell you that your hand brake is on and that you have plenty of brake fluid in the reservoir. (If the light stays on it either means your hand brake is on or you need to top up your beake fluid).

Look for leaks around the master cylinder and rear brake cylinders.

think i found the fix

I talked to a friend of mine who is a vw mechanic and he explained that if the power brake booster went out it would be really hard to push in the pedal and if i had a leak i would have significantly less brake fluid so the most likely culprit is the master brake cylinder I'm hoping this is it and i'll be back on the road again.
