tips for mk1 golf gear linkage alignment

hello

as it says in the title been been messing around near enough all day to try an sort it out but cant get 4th and as soon as i try to get it in 5th the link comes off.

so any advice as i read somewhere theres not a plate like you can use on the mk2 golfs, but theres some measurement that can be used?

and if not will a garage be able to do it?

This is old post but i'll just say howI solved this prob.

 What I done to get the gears engaging correctly was…slide the upright linkage off the end of the selector shaft. Now with this disconected, manually engage reverse on the gearbox. Then put the gearstick into the reverse position. The manner in which reverse is engagged means it will always be in the same position more or less. If the gearbox is in reverse everything should line up correctly.

now Slide the upright back onto the shaft and tighten the nut. When I done this the gears worked perfectly.
