Tie rod end/ball joint

Dear all,
 
I have come to replace my passenger side ball joint on my MK1 cabrio GTI as it was noisey and which i thought to be an half hour job (yesterday dinner) and i'm still at it now!! Any advice would be grateful for the technique of unscrewing the ball joint from the rod.. Obviously the rod turns with the lower ball joint and i cant seem to grip it with anything.. I will be tryin heat with a blow tourch this morning..

Do you mean the track rod end? dont know about the cabrio but i believe [ as iv never changed one] that the ball joint dosnt actually come of on the passenger side and the whole length needs changing.

i changed the trackrod end on the passenger side 2 years ago for an mot so it can be done. warm it gentle and use mole grips (don't use them very often) to grip the tie rod.
