The quest for standard GTI suspension...
My '83 1800 GTI is now on the road after a long resto, but the front is too high. I want standard suspension, i.e standard GTI ride height and spring rates.
I've replaced the shocks all round with new Bilstein standard units, but the car is high at the front. The wheel centre to arch measurement is about 360mm, maybe a few mil more… I believe is should be 340mm, and this would certainly seem reasonable given the current situation.
ECP supply supposedly GTI springs, but fairly typically, when pressed it transpires that the springs and shocks they supply are the same for ALL Mk1 Golf models, which as we all know is boll**ks.
What I need to know is:
- Where can I get a pair of front GTI standard springs, i.e 20mm lower than I have now?
- What am I to ask for? Is there a specific colour code painted on the correct ones?
- Is it just the springs, or are the struts different i.e is the welded bottom spring platform in a different (higher) place on the non-GTI models? It maybe that I have non-GTI struts fitted and therefore that just springs won't help.
Somebody please help me make sense of this, since as usual ECP, and also GSF on this occasion, are fairly useless.
Thanks in advance.
