suspension strut top mounts

Hello me again
  I followed Tim Stiles advice and tried the rule of finger in my strut mount top ,and find not only a large gap that you can fit your thumb in but the rubber is very cracked and split.
   This was'nt picked up on the MOT.  Is it dangerous ,should I change it immediately and should I use genuine vw parts from my local dealer ,or maybe you might recommend alternatives.

Does it looking anything like THIS?  Mine are probably bad - need to change.   I have heard cases where the bearing/mount is so blown that the strut studs bang against the hood!8O

been a few posts on top mounts, I would replace them as it'll make the car feel so much better! recently done mine as they were as shot as your's sound and I'm very impressed with the difference

GSF do top mount kits, make sure they're the FEBI ones though, heard the other type they do are pants

unless there's alot of play at the top of the suspension the MOT guy wouldn't pick up on them
